Ph.D. Quantitative Finance: "Essays in Financial Economics and Big Data"
Oct 2014 - Jun 2020
My dissertation, titled "Essays in Financial Economics and Big Data", consists of four chapters which all revolve around big data processing and/or banking supervision, and received the best possible grade, summa cum laude. The second chapter, for instance, employs a supervised machine learning model, borrowed from the natural language processing literature to investigate how investors react to soft information. Initially, I attempted to run the algorithm locally, but after identifying several performance bottlenecks, I moved the processing to a cluster computing solution (AWS EMR, a cloud-managed spark service) and persisted the data to the cloud object store S3.
My papers on financial economics dealt with banking supervision and resolution and were published in the Journal of Financial Regulation and Journal of Financial Stability, highlighting my field interest and domain expertise.
